Tatak Duterte | Iligan City to bring back National Steel Corporation

Despite Steel Asia’s withdrawal to purchase the first ever steel mill built in Southeast Asia, National Steel Corporation (NSC) to once again enliven its legacy amid the country’s industrialization and reciprocate with the lagging steel industry.

In Iligan City’s ‘’68th ADLAW SA ILIGAN held on June 16, Acting City Mayor, Vice – Mayor (Msgr.) Jemar L. Vera Cruz eagerly announced NSC’s re-opening emphasized with a Visayan term, ‘gabanag – banag’ roughly translated as ‘comes forth as the morning rising' as anticipation from the Iliganons grew.

"We are moving heaven and earth to open again the National Steel Corporation," Mayor Vera Cruz said.

By sharing good news and updates on bringing back NSC, Mayor Vera Cruz motivated the people working for the factory to FOCUS on the interest of the common good while also having to share Iligan’s key points on politics for 68 years.

“We need to unite, we can go nowhere if we are not united,” he said.

He also sought an appeal to anyone ‘in power’ to single out personal interests and pride in the name of public service and asked everyone “to be with us, dream with us, and work with us to achieve its dreams for the City of Iligan” as he concluded his message.

To recall, one of President Rodrigo Duterte’s promises during his electoral campaign in 2016 was to REVIVE the iron and steel industry in the country, which he believes as the backbone of industrialization.

The industry’s labor and output had tremendously subsided over time primarily due to constant availability of even cheaper steel imports from China along with tax exemptions attributed to agreements under the World Trade Organization.

Among the recommendations of the business groups in a consultative meeting with the government last June was the practice of “responsible mining”, with the option to gradually phase out mineral-ore exporting. This, they said, would spur value-adding in the local iron and steel industry.

Various business groups were able to consolidate key points in a consultative meeting held on June 2016 suggesting an option to ‘gradually’ phase out Mineral – Ore exporting being a part of ‘responsible mining’ techniques. Once attained, they believe, should put local iron and steel industry back to its knees once again.
