Believe it or not, Jarel Barcelona Tadio has updated his profile picture. A boy that once grew up in poverty, a boy who once had his own relatives say that he will never get out of poverty, a boy who only has his parents as inspiration worked tooth and nail in order to finish college and prove them all wrong. Tadio has finally updated his profile picture like most graduating students into an image of him smiling against the struggles of life, in his toga, waiving his numerous medallions of success.

As aforementioned, Tadio is a person that grew up in the pits of poverty. He used to envy his classmates back in Elementary after realizing that they have quite a lot more than his family did. And when asked about their dream profession, the reality of his family’s poverty caught him offguard and had him question this, “Can his family afford to send him to college?” and not “what does he truly want to become when he grows order?”

With an awakening at such a young age, Tadio aimed to have his life revolve around two things, believing that “a dream is a vision of a possibility which requires a driven mind and a resilient heart to turn such dream into a reality” and that no matter what people tell you, don’t let them stop your driven mind and resilient heart from turning that dream into a reality.

But what was Tadio’s dream?
He was not ashamed to state that he came from mud, sweat and tears, a farming family. But one that does not own its own land. He stated that every vacation would be one in the planes of Apayao and Kalinga in Cordillera which had him relaxingly sun-bathing while he rice.

But the mud that his feet sank and the grains of rice that came out of every his efforts taught him a valuable lesson, that ever drop of sweat that drips from his parents is a reason to work harder.

When Tadio was about to finish high school, his classmates asked him about where he wanted to go to college. He was speechless, he’s never really thought about it and stated that he didn’t want to wait till blood started dripping down his parents body, that he will work in order to help his family.

It was the reality of life, that he wasn’t fortunate enough to have studied in college and finish off with a degree for he had to put their family’s immediate needs before his dream.

But one day Tadio’s mom called him and stated that, “Nak susubukan naming suportahan ang inyong pag-aaral anak, gagawa kami ng paraan.”

This caused Tadio’s heart to race but eventually he realized that his family might drown in debt. The young man realized that his family needed financial assistance rather than having another financial liability. This saddened him and caused him to despise those who have the capabilities to go to college yet hate the fact that they need to study while he who wants to study can’t go to college.

Yet the frustrations didn’t stop Tadio from achieving his dream. His driven mind and resilient heart had him working in order to support his family and college. He started off as an on-call substitute in a catering crew. It was a job that gave him a miniscule amount of pay in return and with that, Tadio was forced to look for a regular job after two months.

This is when he became a maid and had no shame about it. In reality he considers himself lucky for he had free rent, food, cable television and wifi. It was an initial dream come true for Tadio and even if he knew that his parents can’t get him through college, plain and simple, he can.

But one day, an existential crisis plagued Tadio’s mind. He thought to himself that, “Jarel, forever ka na bang kasambahay? Forever nalang bang ganito?”

And with that he made an important realization. Achieving an education was his most important dream and a dream that will have him achieve his final goal of finishing college and being able to help his parents.

This ultimately inspired him to continue studying as a working student. Despite its hardships, Tadio would study in the morning and work all afternoon and night. It was weariness and sleepiness was his biggest enemies but there were also his projects, quizzes and demanding recitations.

It was no secret to his relatives though that his family was poor. It just saddened him that his own blood would be the very first to discriminate someone who is trying his best to get out of poverty. To have them spread gossip and rumors about your situation rather than help you and be your inspiration to continue on.

It was so intense that he never forgot this line from one of his relatives, “Sino naman ang magpapaaral sa kanya eh, wala naman silang lupang sakahan. Madi maka graduate ata, hanggang pangarap lang atan.”

First poverty, now discrimination. Tadio was even more fired up to finish college because he realized that he will not be shaken, they may drag you down but they are not the reason on why you exist.

“...we live for the people who have faith in us – because this life is for our family,” Tadio stated.

And with those words he lived by, he realized that he was neither born to impress or please them, he was born in order to fulfill his own destiny. To become the best version of himself which serves as his life’s purpose. But Tadio will never forget that despite everything, his immediate family comes first.

“DREAMS combined with faith and determination DO COME TRUE,” he furthermore stated.

And now with those dreams he learned to never give up. The fruits of each tear and sacrifice of his parents with their never-ending trust and belief in their child got him to the finish line of his academe, a College Graduate.

With that he was so thankful for those who helped him make his dreams a reality. He thanked his parents that served as inspirations, the reason behind his accomplishments, his family who which drove Tadio to finish studying, to the family that he worked with as a maid and gave him the capabilities to sustain himself all while giving him the basic needs to sustain life as a working student and to his dear college, Cagayan State University that taught Tadio the skills, lessons and values that made will serve as his future offense and defense in life. He also thanked his debate coach for giving him the honor of representing all Health Information Management students and proving to the entire student body that they are intellectuals.

He then advised his friend that, “...in moments of doubt, remember our family, especially our parents, our friends and love ones, they are always ready to guide and support us.”

With the hardships of life that Tadio has gone through, resilience is one of the things that got him through. He stated that,

“Let us not be afraid in facing challenges. Let’s pursue our dreams. Mapapagod pero hindi susuko. Masusugatan pero hindi aayaw. Mabibigo pero hindi bibitaw.”

And added that, “I WILL CONTINUE MAKING MY PARENTS THE PROUDEST. IT’S NOT THE EASIEST, BUT I BELIEVE IT’S CERTAINLY THE BEST.”

Tadio a proud kasam-bahay graduated as Magna Cum Laude, despite his family’s poverty, own relatives’ discriminations and the fact that he works and studies at the same time. So this leaves us to conclude with a question, if he can do it, can’t we do it too?
