As the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) intensifies its major cleanup drive with the destination ‘hot spots’ in Palawan, at least 75 business proprietors have been ordered to eliminate or self – demolish their establishments in a span of 30 days.

The DENR made the statement on Friday, April 20 that these structures are to be removed since they are erected within Coron, Palawan’s Easement Zones.

The ‘Notice to Vacate’ were served by Task Force Coron on Thursday to establishments violating the Water and Civil Codes in Barangays: Tagumpay, Poblacion 1, Poblacion 3, and Poblacion 5. They include Restaurants, Hotels, Laundry Shops, Lodging and Boarding Houses, among others.

Such Notification adheres to Philippine Water Code which refers to the prohibition of illegally inhabiting seashores, lakes, and riverbanks within 3 meters in urban areas and 40 meters in forest areas.

Civil Code of the Philippines, on the other hand, define shores “and others of similar character” as property of public dominion and declare as nuisance “establishment, business or condition of property, or anything else which obstructs or interferes with the free passage of any body of water.”

The demolition orders were acted upon the findings revealed by the DENR showing toxic levels of ‘fecal coliform’ in Coron Bay due to lack of a Centralized Sewage Facility and overcrowded water edges and mangrove areas.

In a statement, Task Force Coron Head Roman Legaspi said: “Kaya hindi lang encroachment ang tinitingnan natin. Sinisiguro rin natin na sumusunod ang mga business establishments sa mga batas ukol sa tamang paraan ng pagtatapon ng basura at maruming tubig, at iba pang batas na nagpoprotekta sa ating kalikasan,”

Task Force Coron was issued under the order of Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu by DENR MIMAROPA (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) to enforce strict Environment Laws in the Country’s main beach destinations.

Coron being a first – class community in Palawan is best known for its crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches and magnificent landscapes including Kayangan Lake.

Meanwhile, similar Task Force policy have also been introduced for both Puerto Galera in Mindoro and El Nido in Palawan.
