With the Department of Education (DepEd) already gave its GO SIGNAL for tuition hike, Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education Bishop Roberto Mallari slams critics over the weekend, defending that the increase was not intended but a necessary effort to attain a high quality of education to the young.
In a statement, Mallari said, “Private schools are forced to increase tuition and other fees to ensure effective curriculum implementation and maintain the quality of student services in general.”

“The support given by the government to participating schools helps substantially in increasing operational vitality. However, given the huge financial requirements in safeguarding student support services and teacher and staff development, among others, private schools often effect minimal fee increases to bridge finances,” he said.
Clarifying that the said tuition hike has already been discussed to Parents along with its objective behind the move, Mallari assured that Catholic schools shall continue to provide scholarships and other subsidy initiatives for deserving students under the marginal sector.

“Private schools return the cost of fees in terms of keeping quality as an imperative,” he said.

Meanwhile, more ‘police visibility’ and involvement among school vicinities shall be expected in the coming weeks as Oplan: Ligtas Balik – Eskwela 2018 rolls out intended for the safety of nearly 29 million Private and Public-School Students going back to school starting Monday, June 04, 2018.

“Of priority concern to the PNP are the pickpockets, snatchers, swindlers, robbery/hold-up groups and street-level drug traffickers,” PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde said in a statement.

“Police Patrols in the vicinity of schools will also be on the lookout for drug traffickers, muggers and violent street gangs that may infiltrate the ranks of students,” he added.

Albayalde provided blanket authority to all Regional Directors in raising Alert Levels on discretionary basis should the need arises as they implement their respective security and public safety plans.

“So far, our alert is normal alert. We leave the discretion to the different regional directors if there is a need to level up the alert,” he said.

Further, DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones forewarned School Officials against selling food items prohibited to the young stomachs.

Briones advocates for canteen food with less salt and the right amount of sugar, adding that sodas or beverages with carbonated content and ‘junk’ food should not be allowed for consumption.

She demanded that, “Canteens that will be caught violating any of these will be closed,”
