MANILA, Philippines  –  President Rodrigo Duterte has cancelled the Independence Day vin d’honneur traditionally hosted by the chief executive at Malacañang Palace due to the ongoing conflict in Marawi City.

The cancellation of the event was announced by Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella on Friday, June 9. The vin d’honneur was supposed to be hosted by the President on June 12 in honor of the country’s celebration of Independence Day.

Abella said Duterte will only attend the simple flag ceremony at Rizal Park on Monday morning and will be busy attending the affairs concerning Mindanao and the Marawi crisis afterwards.

“The vin d’honneur scheduled on Monday, June 12, has been cancelled. After the Rizal Park flag raising activity, on the same day, the President will attend to matters pertaining Mindanao,” said Abella in a statement.

This is the first time na cancel ang event na ito. What can you say about this? Pabor ba kayo dito or hindi?

Duterte has placed the entire Mindanao under martial law last May 23, one day after the Maute Group attacked Marawi.

It has been nearly three weeks and the crisis remains unresolved with the casualty rising to more than 200 already, including 45 government troops and 30 civilians.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines earlier said they are hoping to end the conflict on Independence Day as the Maute offensive continues to weaken each day.
